Crumbly Lancashire Cheese

Dewlay Crumbly Lancashire Cheese

I wasn’t sure what a ‘crumbly Lancashire cheese’ was to be honest. Is it like a cheddar? Is it a Wensleydale type cheese? Not really heard of a Lancashire crumbly cheese before.
The Shop

Getting to the shop is nice and easy. Just come off the M6 at junction 33 and follow the signs for Garstang – it will be about a 10 minute drive to get to the factory shop.
You can’t miss the shop – there is a large gateway and it is well signed (look for the big wind turbine). There is ample parking for visitors and the shop is attractive and spacious and seems to be well frequented by locals and tourists alike. There are other regional products available in the shop as well – and also many other types of cheeses. The staff are extremeley helpful and knowledgeable about their products – if you’re not sure what to get, ask them, they can guide you to the right choice – they will be pleased to help and share their knowledge.
Apparently they have a viewing gallery as well so that you can see the cheese being made. I didn’t take the opportunity to use that facility as I was in a hurry to get back to sunny Grimsby. So only went in for the essentials – cheese!

The Cheese

I wasn’t sure what a ‘crumbly Lancashire cheese’ was to be honest. Is it like a cheddar? Is it a Wensleydale type cheese? Not really heard of a Lancashire cheese before, so my cheese education still continues.

Cheese and tomato

Having managed to finally get around to trying the cheese – it is a white cheese…and it is crumbly 🙂 it is more like a Feta cheese. Now THAT was unexpected!

Dewlays says that the cheese goes well crumbled on salad – they’re not wrong (obviously. They know their cheese and the best way to eat it)! It has a very tangy flavour and it is very crumbly. I liked it (not sure Pack Man did though). I can imagine it goes very well in olive oil with olives (like you get in a deli – how I like my Feta cheese).

Our Verdict

Van Man Says: I think this is a nice tangy cheese. Perfect for salads and deli olives. Was not what I was expecting though.

Pack Man Says: Not a fan of this one. Found it a bit bitter and dry. Maybe it’s supposed to be like that?

It's a white cheese and … crumbly!
This is a 'summer' cheese. Light and tangy. I think it would go well with salad and also with olives.
