Getting to Gloagburn Farm shop is a doddle and well worth the slight diversion (about 10 minutes off the A9 … if that).
The farm shop is clearly signposted off the A9 with a brown tourist sign. Make the effort to go. There is a large car park and an extremely well appointed shop. Admittedly there is masses of stuff which doesn’t come from the farm, but there is more than enough that does! I went specifically for 3 different products. Sadly they didn’t have 2 of them so I had to make a spontaneous decision to try out some other stuff I found in the farm shop.
I must confess that Van Man is not a fan of mature cheddar at all (although I did try some). But all is not lost. Pack Man is an EXPERT in mature cheddar and Mrs Van Man has bravely stepped in to review the cheddar on Van Mans behalf so everything is right with the world and equilibrium has been re-established!
Being the cheese Philistine I am, the only cheese I have ever had with a wax coating is a mini-Babybel! So this was a new experience for me just trying to get in to the cheese. I just cut it – is that that right thing to do? Should I have peeled it or something? Anyhoo, I got into it. For me it tasted strong. Creamy and very strong. But as I said previously I’m not a fan of mature cheddar so I don’t know if this is a good thing or a bad thing, the right thing or the wrong thing…I’ll await Pack Man and Mrs Van Mans’ verdict on that.
Pack Man Says: Extra mature? Needs a bit more blue rinse! Very tame for an extra mature cheese. Nice and creamy texture but lacking punch.
Van Man Says: And the review is just in from Mrs Van Man……..ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS she says!
