Pickled Onion Cheese? YES, PICKLED ONION CHEESE !?!

We now have some pickled onion cheese for your delectation – my cheese education continues apace!

Pickled onion cheese? Yes! Really! We now have some pickled onion cheese for your delectation. Who knew that pickled onion cheese was a thing – I didn’t but I do now – my cheese education continues apace!

I picked this up more by accident than by design. I was just grabbing stuff from the fridge and shoving it in my basket when I visited Long Clawson Dairy. The visit was part of my swoop to get as many different types of cheeses during my visit , and this happened to pe part of the swoop.

So, this is the first time I have had pickled onion cheese (have you had it before – let me know in the comments if you have and what you thought of it?). I admit that I wasn’t particularly looking forward to trying it – but I was going to sacrifice my tastebuds for the good of this blog.

Crunchy

It was a strange sensation cutting the cheese and feeling the knife crunching though it as I cut (you don’t expect cheese to ‘crunch’). It is quite a soft cheese (apart from where you’re cutting through the chunks of pickled onion liberally spread throughout).
With great trepidation I tried a chunk of the cheese I had just cut…
I must confess that the taste was not bad at all! The cheese itself was maybe just a little too soft, however the pickled onions embedded in it offset the softness by their crunchiness. The pickled onion taste is not overpowering and compliments the cheddar cheese well.

Clawsons Dairy calls this cheese Innkeepers Choice – you can see why. As they state on their website it is a perfect cheese to go with your Ploughmans lunch.

Pack Man Says: Purely my taste but I would prefer MORE pickled onions in this cheese! It does have a creamy texture and it goes BEAUTIFULLY with ready salted crisps!

Van Man Says: A tasty cheese. It is a cheese that is nice to have occasionally and as part of a meal rather than on a cheese board. A little soft for my liking, but it is a cheese I would buy again.

Being the cheese Philistine I am, the only cheese I have ever had with a wax coating is a mini-Babybel! So this was a new experience for me just trying to get in to the cheese.
