Divine Colston Bassett Stilton

The hardest choice you’re going to have to make is which size of cheese you want – small, medium or large.

If you’re after a ‘shopping experience’ then this shop is probably not for you – you’d be better getting the cheese online or from a supplier. If however you’re like me and want a no frills, no hassle, easy, simple and quick ‘shopping experience’ then this is defo for you.
The shop is a fridge full of two types of cheese next to the office in the actual place they make the cheese! FANTASTIC! The hardest choice you’re going to have to make is which size of cheese you want – small, medium or large (I think you can buy half rounds and full rounds as well). The OTHER choice you can make as well as size, is of course, do you buy the Shropshire Blue at the same time as the stilton? No brainer for me that one I can assure you – YES of course! We’ll review the Shropshire Blue in a separate review.

Anyway, the cheese. It is truly a thing of beauty wrapped in it’s blue and white wax paper packaging. A huge chunk of stilton (and that’s medium size) sat on the seat in the van next to me on my way home. It’s calling me to try it. I can’t resist. I crumble some of the stilton into my mouth and fall into paroxyms of delight as the cheese melts onto my tongue and I nearly crash the van! Heaven! I suppose I had better leave some for Pack Man to taste.

As if the cheese wasn’t enough, the Colston Bassett website ALSO has recipes for you to make – featuring in them of course some of their cheese. I have still to try and make any of the recipes – I’m an eater rather than a cook as the Better Half will testify, although the recipes do look fantastic.

The prices – each chunk is individually priced but the medium size is around the £8 mark and small size is around the £3.50 mark – a small price to pay for this quality cheese and worth every penny.

Van Man Says: I couldn’t wait until I got home to try it…so I tried it on the way home instead! It didn’t disappoint. Love it, love it, love it! And at a price that will keep me going back. In fact I have to confess, stopping at Colston Bassett Dairy has now become a regular thing (and it’s in a very pretty village as well).

Pack Man Says: I didn’t get to try this one. Mrs Packman scoffed the lot! Tells you everything really! 10 out of 10 from Her.

Colston Bassett Stilton Review

Blue Cheese
Melt in your mouth creaminess. A pleasure to eat in chunks on it's own as well as with port, sherry or your other drink of choice. A definite must have on your cheeseboard, and at the price there is NO excuse for NOT having it on your cheeseboard.

Beautiful pastry – not too crumbly and not too hard. Filling was lovely. Just the right amount of jelly in the pie.
