Ye Olde Pie Shoppe Melton Mowbray

It’s always a good sign if there’s a queue at a shop – there was a queue when I arrived at Ye Olde Pie Shoppe in Melton Mowbray. Quite a substantial queue as well for a pie shop I thought. There must have been at least 10 people eagerly waiting to get in.
When the doors opened to the shop we all piled in, everyone trying to be polite but really just wanting everyone else out the way so we could see all the lovely stuff in the shop.
I pick up a bag and force my way round the shop (I had my hi-viz on so felt empowered to shove people out the way) to find the best pies to take back for sampling by Pack Man and me. I’m looking for a variety of pies for our taste test – but they all look the same to me, although they do have different packaging and are also different sizes. This review though is for the ‘Mrs King’s Melton Mowbray Small Pork Pie 320g‘.
It states on their website that this ‘small’ pork pie is for 2 to 3 people. Hmmm, they obviously haven’t met the human dustbins that are Pack Man and me. I suppose it would probably do for 2 to 3 normal people, but I have to confess I sat and troughed it in one sitting…and within just a couple of minutes. Niiice!
VAN MAN says: what a delish pie. Beautiful pastry – not too crumbly and not too hard. Filling was lovely. Just the right amount of jelly in the pie. I thought it would be quite a ‘heavy’ pie and would fill me up very quickly, It wasn’t and it didn’t.
I cut a chunk off the pie and ate it, then did the same again … and again, then, as if by magic, it was gone!
PACK MAN says: After the first half I wasn’t convinced. So I had to eat the rest to make sure. Lovely pastry, filled with meat. I’m sending the Van Man there to get more ASAP!
We can see why Ye Olde Pork Pie Shoppe calls itself the spiritual home of the pork pie. A fantastic pork pie, and a place we will be returning to often to get more.
